Academic Experience


Florida Atlantic University College of Business, (1993 - current)

  • Associate Professor of Marketing & International Business, Department of Marketing (2002-current).
  • Associate Professor (1996-2002) of International Business, Department of Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship.
  • Enthusiastically teaches international marketing/business research methods including structural equation modeling to doctoral students; global marketing, international business and marketing management to MBAs and international marketing and international business to undergraduates. Helped to organize and lead foreign ‘immersion’ study tours in international business/marketing to Costa Rica (1999), Brazil (2001, 2002) and England and Ireland (2003, 2005).
  • Professor Mullen’s research is focused on international marketing management, research methods and public policy. He has more than 40 refereed articles in leading academic journals, books and proceedings that have been cited more than 500 times in the academic literature. Please see a detailed list below under international marketing research and scholarship followed by a list of other non-refereed creative/scholarly work.
  • Chair/Co-Chair of marketing dissertations for four brilliant doctoral students (Chinese, Bulgarian, Tunisian & Irish) all expected to earn Ph.D.s 2008/09. Chair: Shirley Ye Sheng (2008) and Desi Budeva, on going and Co-Chair: Selima Ben Mrad (2008). The 4th Daire Hooper is at DIT and will graduate November 2008.
  • Marketing Ph.D. Committee; responsible for admissions, advising, curriculum development, comprehensive examinations and dissertation committees for all marketing doctoral students, member (2003-current), Ph.D. Advisor and Chair, (2005-2006).
  • Dissertation Committees: International Business (M. Downes), Marketing (Faun Li, Blaine Branchik, Luis Torres), and in Public Policy (Yanru Chuoi) and Dr. Yong Mi’s DIS Post-doctorate.
  • One of seven from FAU on Bike2Belarus.com, an Irish led humanitarian fundraiser to help the victims of Chernobyl. We biked 300 km across Belarus from Minsk to the contaminated zone with about 110 Irish, Belarusian, Brits & Floridians (2006).
  • College of Business, Equity Committee, Chair (2005)
  • New Course development: MBA-> MAR 6158 Global Marketing Management and MAR 6959 Global Marketing Field Experience.  Ph.D.-> developed and taught seminars on structural equation modeling, international business research methods (while in Management Department) and international marketing research methods (while in the Marketing Department) to students and occasional faculty from the College and our (former) partner in business doctoral programs, Florida International University.
  • Internships: worked with local firms/organizations and FAU’s College of Business Internship Director to arrange and advise international marketing and international business internships (e.g., 12 in 2003).
  • College of Business, Graduate Council, member (2002-2004).
  • Participant on Trade Mission to China sponsored by Enterprise Florida and the International Business Council (2002). Met with four Universities and brought back a proposal for student and faculty exchange program in Western China. We were not able to reach an agreement beneficial to both Universities.
  • Personnel Committee, Department of Management and International Business (various years through Spring 2002).
  • One of four PIs on successful follow-on U.S. Department of Education Title VI-B grant (application only), participant in the MS in IB program development process but without grant management involvement (1999-2000).
  • Director & Principal Investigator U.S. Department of Education Title VI-B grant to fund FAU's International Business Education Initiative. Led more than 60 business executives and 50 faculty in a process that resulted in a substantially revised undergraduate International Business and Trade major, an IB Track in the MBA and Executive MBA programs, a Certificate of International Business: Theory & Practice and a Graduate Certificate of International Business. Faculty and curriculum development included over 20 new and revised IB courses, ~ 60 funded IB faculty development projects, expansion of the student internship program and a variety of foreign study tours for graduate and undergraduate students (1995-1999).
  • The AACSB Team (reaccredidation) Report, Section 1, noted the “IB initiative provides strong evidence of the operational effectiveness of the systems and process (i.e., shared governance)” and “excellent use of advisory boards and special ad hoc committees combining faculty and the community.” The AACSB Report also said the “IB initiative provided an excellent example of the continuous improvement cycle including stakeholder involvement.” 
  • FAU’s College of Business was presented with the International Business Achievement Award by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce (1997) in recognition “for its continued design and development of international programs” as a direct result of the close ‘working’ partnership between the IB community and the College’s IB faculty throughout the process of planning and implementing FAU’s IB Education Initiative.
  • International Business & Economics Coordinating Committee, College of Business, member (1997-1999), Chair (1996-97).
  •  FAU Undergraduate Teaching Incentive Award (1998), primarily for IB curriculum and program development.
  • Organized “Toys for Haiti” Christmas charity drive in cooperation with Amerijet International and Sister Cities. Drop off boxes on three campuses and a web site collected donations, food, clothes and toys. Amerijet International delivered the presents to orphanages and schools including Cap Haitian, Fort Lauderdale’s Sister City (2002).
  • Strategic Planning Council, College of Business, member (1997-98).
  • Academic Director, Center for International Business and Information Transfer (1996 - 98).
  • University Faculty Council, elected at large representative of the faculty on Broward campuses (1996-97).

  • Assistant Professor (1993-1996) of International Business, Department of Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship.
  • International Business Faculty, organized College wide interest group, appointed acting Chair  (1994-1995), elected coordinator (1995).
  • Committee on International Track for the MBA, College of Business, member (1994).
  • NAFTA Public Educational Forum, faculty experts on NAFTA, nominated by the presidents of nine of Florida’s Universities, made presentation to and were questioned by a panel of political writers from major Florida newspapers. Co-organized with University Research Professor, Dr. John Bernardin (Fall 1993).

Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland

  • Fulbright Scholar in International Business to Ireland, researching and lecturing on international marketing (2005).
  • Co-supervise marketing doctoral dissertation for Daire Hooper, final defense expected August 2008.
  • Initiated reciprocal student exchange program with FAU, approved in 2008, expected to start 2009.
  • External Examiner for undergraduate Business and Management degree program (2007, 2008).
  • External Examiner for undergraduate business degree program offered jointly at the Institute for Integrated Learning in Management, New Delhi, India (2008).

University of Cambridge, England (1999-2000)

  • Visiting University Lecturer in International Management at the Judge Institute of Management Studies.
  • Taught Quantitative Research Methods (M.Phil. Ph.D.), International Business Management (MBA) and Strategic Management (undergraduate).
  • Curriculum consultant on quantitative research methods for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs.
  • Academic member of the Center of International Business and Management (CIBAM) at the Judge Institute while at Cambridge, associate academic member since (2001-current).

  • Taught MS courses in Strategic Concepts in Marketing  (2002) and International Marketing (2003).

  • Taught and conducted international marketing research. Worked with Canacintra, a Mexican Chamber of Commerce, the students in summer class helped develop and conduct a survey of purchasing managers from regional manufacturing firms (1993).

Marketing Consultant and Expert Witness

Marketing research affiliate with Cooper Research Group, Inc., Boca Raton, FL, working on advanced statistical analysis and interpretation of world wide B2B customer/channel satisfaction survey data for Fortune 100 companies (1997-1998). Interviewed and quoted by the Wall Street Journal as “an expert in international management,” October 15, 1999, p. 1, (U.S. and European Editions). Admitted as an expert witness in international business and marketing and quantitative analysis (i.e., damage models or statistical analysis) of business information by Florida Circuit Court (2001). Occasional business consulting and service as an expert witness.

Mullen Telecommunications, Inc, Green Bay, WI (1976-85)

  • President; Built more than 250 Cable TV, telephone, and data transmission systems in thirteen states; many of which were turnkey projects from design through marketing.
  • The firm was on the cutting edge of applied technology building several of the first interactive cable, fiber optic, and data transmission projects in the U.S. 
  • Chairman and CEO of two related Mullen Communication Construction Companies in Milwaukee and Minneapolis, affiliated with the AFL-CIO CWA and IBEW, respectively.
  • Worked with the Milwaukee Urban League to identify and train minorities for telecommunication construction jobs, Received Special Initiative Award from the Milwaukee Urban League "for creating equal opportunities for minority enterprise and job development" (1982).
  • Telephone cable splicer’s assistant at age 15, worked on and off in telecom as a UW-O student, eventually becoming supervisor of telephone construction projects for U.S. Cable, Inc., Appleton, WI, before starting MTI.

Rainy Day Enterprises I & II, Green Bay, WI

owner/manager of an investment proprietorship (1976-88) and partnership (1982-86) which held 15 real estate properties, a small cable TV system, and investments in oil and gas, a telecommunications distributor, and various publicly traded stocks.

Mullen’s Floral, Inc., Kaukauna, WI

Retail floral and gift business with greenhouses, Treasurer, 50% owner with my sister Sue (1983-87).

North Central Cable, Inc., Wisconsin

Founder and director. This business won 14 small NE Wisconsin cable TV franchises. We raised the capital, constructed, marketed, managed and sold these systems (1982-85).

Mullen Company

My brother Charles and I invented, manufactured, and internationally marketed a telecommunications tool used to form cable expansion loops for the cable TV industry (1982-85). The “Mullen Bender” is still the industry standard and in wide use in the U.S. and many other countries.

Wisconsin Cable Communications Association

  • Board of Directors, (1981-83).

U. S. House of Representatives, Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District

  • Began as a volunteer campaign field manager for Father (Rev.) Cornell (1974).
  • Became press secretary & district liaison on Congressman Cornell's Washington, D. C. staff (1975).
  • Note: both positions while a student, first at UW-O, then American University in D.C. (& back to UW-O to finish).

Vietnam veteran

  • Initiated and operated a civic action program within the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division (1967-68).
  • Awarded 5 medals by the United States Army including the Bronze Star for Achievement.
  • Awarded 3 medals by the Republic of Vietnam including the Civic Action Honor Medal.
